over the weekend i was looking at my flat, and for the third tube in a row, i have a slice right when the filler valve connects to the tire. i’m wondering if the tire is slipping along the wheel and bringing the tube with it.

Your guess is probably correct. There are a couple of solutions. More air in the tire will help the bead stay set in place. A little glue in a spot or two will do the same. If you don’t want to do that, I’d recommend taking a file or some sandpaper to the valve stem hole to smooth out the sharp edges and prevent future cuts.

Check your rim for burrs right at the hole? You running low pressures or anything? double check tube size..
I’ve gone through my share of tires ($%#^ cantilever brakepads) and tubes (diy studded tires) for dumb reasons, I know your feels..

i sanded it and then put electrical tape around the hole. didn’t help.

A solution depends on presta or schrader valve type. I’ve reamed a presta hole wide enough to take a rubber electrical grommet and then nutted the stem with a fair sized washer. Also make sure you have correct size tube for the tire. One that is a tad too small will move more. It might fit when fully inflated but if pressure is down it might move. On a schrader valve type I’ve cut a disc of rubber from an old tube , punched a hole in it and glued it over the base of the stem.

presta or schrader valve?

Hmmmm. I’ve seen some valve stems survive some crazy angles in the hole when it is nice and smooth. I’d give it another go, but use a round file this time.
You can also try using talcum inside the tire to loosen its grip on the inner tube. Also make sure your rim tape is correctly mounted. It helps keep the tube from slipping around the inside of the rim.

its a presta, I had thought of trying to get some sort of grommet. i’m not sure what pressure I run, but I think its a bit lower than what it says on the side. I think it helps with grip and absorbing some impacts. this has only happened in the last couple months, while i’ve been riding like this for years.

i’ve sanded it down so I dont think it has burrs. Its also tear vs a puncture.
I think my pressure is a bit low for offroad grip, but its nothing different than what i’ve been doing for years.

presta, which i’m not really sold on the benifits.

that might be something worth picking up.

If you are using the lock nuts; Stop. That’s what’s killing your tubes. Toss em. I used to work at a few shops and that was very common. It’s counter intuitive but it works. It’s not the rim that’s cutting your tubes is the tube moving and the valve staying put. The valve needs a little wiggle room

that could be it right there.

I used to cycle a lot and repaired bikes on the side. Small electric grommets will work. If you see some that are soft rubber and others are more like flexible plastic you should go with the plastic. the rubber ones if too soft will cut also. I used to ride soft tires on some trails but pump them up higher for th e road ride home. Had some of those same issues when running below recommended pressure. Also it helps if you don’t use much talc on the tubes when mounting them, the rubber will naturally attach itself slightly to the tire lining just enough to keep it from sliding around. What type of rim tape is on the inside of the rim? That can matter too. The cotton adhesive roll type stay in place better than rubber, urethane or plastic band types and may keep the tube from rotating as much since they have more texture. I’ve always liked Velox brand. The tape being thicker might protect the stem some also.

whatever is on there for rim tape is what came with it so its a few years old. I also need to straighten the rims and do something with the soggy rear brakes.
hammerheadfistpunch said the nut on the valve base could also help cuse the issue as it doesn;t allow the tube to move like its wants to

I had the same experience on my trek. Ditch the lock washers.
